Per Welinder - founder Walk For Good

I grew up in Sweden with a skateboard and a big dream of California. That leap opened doors I couldn’t have imagined—onto the Bones Brigade, skate shows on the Venice Boardwalk, a turn as Michael J. Fox’s skate double in Back to the Future, and eventually co-founding Birdhouse with Tony Hawk. The highlight of those years wasn’t a trophy or a headline; it was the community—ordinary days made special by showing up, moving together, and sharing stories. I helped launch Go Skateboarding Day because I believed culture grows from the ground up.

Over time I learned that simple habits beat grand plans. For me, walking became that anchor. I’ve walked about an hour most days for the last twenty years—sometimes with a coffee, often with a friend, always feeling better than when I left. Walking asks very little and gives a lot: a clearer mind, a stronger body, and a reason to connect with the place you live.

Walk For Good is my next chapter—a city-by-city walking movement launching in June 2026. It’s built around small, welcoming meetups that make it easy to belong: local hosts, familiar routes, and a steady rhythm that turns “maybe someday” into “see you Saturday.” No finish lines to chase. No perfect gear. Just neighborhoods, parks, and city blocks filling up with people who want to feel a little better and help their communities do the same.

If my journey has taught me anything, it’s that the best things grow person by person, block by block. I hope you’ll join us—bring your shoes, bring a friend, and let’s make walking the easiest good habit in America.
